The practical test examines your general driving skills, and you will need to demonstrate:
A confident, safe, considerate and risk free drive,
Competence at the set manoeuvres,
A thorough knowledge of the Highway Code as you complete the route.
The test includes:
An eyesight test,
Two safety check questions, one “Show Me”, one “Tell Me”
Special exercises such as a left reverse, turn in the road, parallel or bay park, and possibly an emergency stop.
The Driving Standards Agency provide the top 10 reasons for people failing the test as:
1. Observation at Junctions,
2. Reverse Parking,
3. Use of Mirrors,
4. Moving Away,
5. Use of Signals,
6. Incorrect Positioning,
7. Reversing Around a Corner,
8. Lack of Steering Control,
9. Turn in the Road,
10. Inappropriate Speed.
Your instructor will teach you all the skills needed to pass the test. Mock tests will be provided as part of your driving lessons in order to give you a taste of how the “real thing” will be. Our experience shows that test nerves are the main obstacle to a successful outcome, and that mock tests help to alleviate this problem. Of course, most people will still be nervous on test day—that is to be expected, but you need to put them aside. When your instructor says you are ready to apply for the test, then you are driving to the required standard. You will deserve the test pass, so drive how you have been taught, and you will be successful.
