The theory test is made up of two parts: 50 multiple choice questions and the hazard perception. You must pass both of these in the same sitting.
The theory test must be passed prior to booking the practical test. You will need to have your certificate number to apply for the practical test, and also take it to show the examiner.
You have fifty seven minutes to complete the multiple choice part, and must get at least 44 out of 50 correct answers to pass. Preparing for the test is important. The questions are based on the following categories:
Alertness
Attitude
Safety and Your Vehicle
Safety Margins
Hazard Awareness
Vulnerable Road Users
Other Types of Vehicle
Vehicle Handling
Motorway Rules
Rules of the Road
Road and Traffic Signs
Documents
Accidents
Vehicle Loading
The hazard perception part consists of 14 video clips with 15 scoreable hazards. When you see a hazard you click the mouse. Depending on how early you perceive the hazard, you can score from 5 to 1 if you click within the scoring time window, otherwise you get zero. You have to get 44 out of 75 to pass.
Your instructor can help you with any aspects of the theory test, and you can have mock tests as part of your driving lessons. Training can be provided using laptop computers to demonstrate how these tests work.
